I don’t know about you, but these last couple of months have been terrible for my waistline. Little by little the pounds have been creeping on. At first I didn’t pay much attention to it since my “yoga pants” were fitting just fine!! As things started opening up and my yoga pants weren’t appropriate attire, I’ve had to put on jeans and summer shorts. Not good.
I don’t know about you, but when my pants are tight and uncomfortable, everything around me seems uncomfortable as well. I feel so disappointed in myself and that just seems to spill over in other areas of my life. And then…the over-exercising starts and then the endless body aches. Such a vicious cycle!!
As I was spending time reading the Bible today, a verse that I read jumped off the page and woke my spirit from its ‘food-induced’ coma! The verse is Deuteronomy 6:11b-12, “then when you eat and are satisfied, be careful that you do not forget the Lord.” At first glance, it sounds like such a simple thing…thank God for the food that we eat. But, this truth is part of a bigger truth that God has been “trying” to teach me for some time now. INVITE GOD INTO EVERYTHING. He is a gentleman. He doesn’t force Himself on us. He gives us freewill. He wants to be invited into our everything including our meals. He loves to break bread with us!
When we pray before we put food into our mouths, we invite Him to help us to know when we are full. He helps us to know when we are eating out of emotions or boredom. He guides us to eat healthy food to fuel our bodies. He tells us when to STOP eating!
If you are struggling with the COVID “fifteen,” please join me in remembering to pray before we put food in our mouths so that the Lord can help us! I’m talking about every-single-snack as well, not just our meals. I used to be so good about remembering to pray before eating, but something happened and I can hardly remember doing it at all recently UNTIL the Lord woke me up today!!!
Here’s a simple prayer we can pray:
Holy Spirit, please bless this food that I’m about to eat to be fuel for my body. Please tell me when to stop and give me the courage to do so! Help me to choose healthy food and healthy portions. THANK YOU for this food and thank for satisfying my every need. In Jesus’ name, Amen.
